Visual Studio 2008 - Finally!!
January 16, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Well, I finally took the plunge in November and took out a new MSDN subscription so that I could get a proper copy of Visual Studio 2008 and all that that entailed; LINQ, Entity Framework, ASP.NET MVC etc as well as Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008.
I did not get the disks until I went home at Christmas but I have now got started using Visual Studio 2008 at last.
So far, all I have done is convert my code to be .NET Framework 3.5 compliant which was extremely painless.
However, now the hard part starts and I have to start thinking of how I can take advantage of all the new technology swimming around me.

Back to Europe

Well, after a Christmas break that was far too short, I am now back in France on my Siebel 8 project where I will be until the end of April.
Things were pretty hectic before I left - working until midnight becomes a pain very quickly!!
The break was good, I finally gave in and installed Vista SP1 on my main development box. On the whole, I like it but some things are different.
When I got back to France, I was unable to ping the box or access it through remote desktop, although I had had no such problems in Canada. I had to take it to work to borrow a monitor and keyboard to see what the problem was.
It turned out that the Windows Firewall was active and all the usual things I needed, such as Remote Desktop, were not enabled. I also discovered that ICMP is turned off by default and I had to do a bit of research in order to enable it again as it is now managed in Administrative Tools rather than Network Connections.
My development box is a small Mini-ITX PC running Intel Dual Core 1.66 and 2G RAM. I carry it with me when I travel as it is small and access it from my laptop with Remote Desktop, which is fine when it works, but if there is a problem, I have to find a monitor to plug in to see what is going on.
